    • Of the medicines listed here, the ones most likely to cause uncontrolled body movements and the shakes are haloperidol, risperidone, ziprasidone, and aripiprazole.

      The ones least likely to cause uncontrolled body movements and the shakes are clozapine, quetiapine, olanzapine.

      While these are the typical side effect profiles of these medications, as we say on our page on treating schizophrenia, each individual can react differently to any one medication. It takes courage and perseverance to keep trying medications to find the best fit, but if a person can stay with the hunt it’s well worth it to find the most effective medication with the fewest side effects.

      The “why” is caused by the way these medicines work in the brain. They block a certain type of brain signaling area, called a receptor. The type of receptor that they block is called the D2 receptor. While these receptors are in the parts of the brain that control the problem symptoms of psychosis, they are also in parts of the brain that control muscle movement.
